Moradabad’s artisans gained recognition for their mastery of engraving and plating. The Mughal elite, with its preference for decorative copper-plated utensils, drove a demand for intricately designed wares and aesthetically appealing. This continued even after the fall of the Mughal empire in the mid-19th century and the establishment of the British rule.

Moradabad’s artisans excelled in combining functionality with ornamentation, creating a diverse range of products that catered to both traditional and modern tastes. The use of lacquer to color engravings added a vibrant allure to the products, setting Moradabad apart.

Meenakari is a traditional Indian art form that involves enameling or painting intricate designs on metal objects, such as jewelry, decorative items and other ornaments. The term ‘Meenakari’ comes from the Hindi words ‘Meena’, meaning enamel and ‘Kari’, meaning work.

Meenakari artists use vibrant colors and intricate designs to create beautiful and durable artworks. The process involves applying multiple layers of enamel to the metal surface, which are then fired in a kiln to achieve the desired colors and patterns.

Adorned with the Meenakari style of art that dates back centuries of refinement, was brought into Rajasthan from Persia by the Mughals. While the brass engraving art form is a tradition of Moradabab in Uttar Pradesh.
